New Logo Redesign - Feedback Please

Yankee Volleyball wants your feedback on a new logo redesign. The designers at Logoworks have completed their first round of concepts and now Yankee Volleyball wants to know what you think.

Please post your comments on the 7 logo concepts and let us know which one you like the best and all suggestions are appreciated.

#2 - however change the color of the volleyball to something other than red (blue or black?) to make it stand out better - red just blends in with the strips.

In order of preference: #1, #2 & #6. :)

# 2 is good for T-Shirts and banners. I choose this one as one and I concur that the volleyball should be a different color...Although... #5 makes great bumper stickers... We need to understand where this is being used. Different logo's are for different uses.

I like the simplicity of #7, however I think the font is too curvy, bubbly. A more solid font would be better. I also like #2- simple and solid.

I like #1 and #5

I'm a fan of #2 and #5, but lose the "promoting volleyball in New England" Of course that is what we are doing by wearing this logo, putting it on our car, having it on a water bottle, etc...

I think #5 is the best for just about all applications. If we want the logo to promote yankee and attract new people, i think it is definately the most eye catching.

In my opinion, all the others look too generic and boring

I like #6 then #5.

in order of preference
#5
#2
#6
i agree with others on getting rid of the "promoting volleyball in new england" line. i think a line with the web address would serve as a better promotion for the organization.

I like #5 the best (might suggest making the volleyball red, white and blue instead of just red and blue). Second choice would be #2.

I might like #5 better than #1...it's easier to see the message in it. :)

#1, #2 & #5 in that order. We need a logo that will get people to come up and ask us what Yankee Volleyball is. Just having Yankee Volleyball on there won't do.

I like #4 and #5. I do agree with the rest of the crowd in not liking the "promoting volleyball in New England" part.

Maybe replace (or add) the website address since?

I like #5 then #4. Having the website URL would be nice.

Like #5. Agree with adding the website on it.

#1, i really like the ball, but would like to see Yankee in some different fonts.

#5, very eye catching. not a big fan of the ball, maybe the one from #1.

#4, i really dislike the ball in this logo, not sure why, just something about it bothers me. And i am not voting for #4, just sharing my dislike of the ball :P

I like 5 and 1 in that order... very catchy designs.

#5

Suggestion, use the ball from #6 to replace the ball on #5 . . .

The volleyball most often used at Yankee Tournaments these days is red, white, & blue, or just white. Our logo should reflect that in however we choose to represent the volleyball itself.

As far as the designs are concerned, of 3, 4, & 5, the one I like best is 5, but I wish it could somehow incorperate a net into the design. With the other 2, I don't like the "cone" used to show that the ball is in motion. #5 has the best potential as a WWW site logo.

Both #2 and #7 would look good on a bumper sticker, or some other rectangular banner.

#1 shows the most potential for a shirt logo, but please add some white stripes (maybe the middle stripe) to the volleyball.

4 and 6 in that order, although I also think there's something annoying about the ball in #4 (and the swoosh leading to it). If it was replaced with the ball in circles from 6 I think the logo would look great. People definitely have the right idea about the "promoting volleyball..." tag line. It should get the boot. Replace it with the web address for the yankee site.

Couple comments on the usability of the graphics from an amateur information visualization designer:

1. Using multiple fonts and word sizes is a deterrent from people reading the words. I assume we want viewers to understand that we are "Yankee," and not just look at the picture of the volleyball and understand that we are a generic volleyball organization. Could change the font of Yankee to make it more readable to fix this problem.

There is also a lot of red in the volleyball here. Typically, red (and other bright colors) should be used sparingly in a graphic. They draw the users attention away from the picture as a whole and into the red parts. Here, there is too much and it is sensory overload.

The word "volleball" is in all uppercase. This is one of the least readable ways to display a word or sentence. This is because there is no variance in the heights, widths or locations of letters in relation to others in the word. Lowercase letters, on the other hand have some letters that are only half height (i.e. "a") and some that are full height (i.e. "b"). The more variance between chars, the easier to read and the less deterrent from reading. Using mixed-case or lowercase would be a better alternative.

2. The parallel white stripes in the flag create a slight moire effect (aka. visual vibration). You can look this up in wikipedia for more info. They deter the viewer from looking the graphic at all. Furthermore the white color in the ball gets lost at the edges where it overlays the white in the flag.

3. Way too much red here. (See #1). A lot of Moire effect is caused by the concentric rings around the vball too. I hope it doesn't send anybody into a seizure.

4. Overall, pretty good. The white of the ball will get lost on a white background. I would advocate getting rid of the red in the volleyball for reasons stated above.

5. Too much red (see above). I can't explain it, but the word yankee just doesn't stand out to me.

6. Moire effect on the concentric rings around the vball. I think the red "Yankee" is good because it makes the name of our organization stand out above all else, but it is not overpowering.

7. Pretty good. I might recommend making the "Promoting volley..." a little darker to be easier to read on a white background.

One thing that is crucial in making this decision is understanding what the background for the yankee logo will be. Will it always be against a white background as on the sample page? If not, it would be useful to see it in different settings.

So far, my vote is for #7

wow - didn't think I'd be so opinionated on this. I really don't think any of them do us justice. As Sam t says - I bet we have a ton of creative ppl who can send in ideas ... maybe even me! :)

#7 is ok but I think the silohetted player needs to be in a "stronger" vb-type position - looks a bit awkward.

#2: it's ok ... but I think we can find a better catch phrase than "promoting vb in NE"

Unknown said...

#5 is really cool, 2nd choice would be #1...

#2- but put the website instead of "promoting..." and outline the vball in black as opposed to red.

Unknown said...

#6 - it is sleek and modern in comparison to the others. i think you should leave the tagline.

What about some different colors? Like dropping the red for gold instead (a little bling never hurts!) Plus gold and blue is a rather pleasing color combo.

I like #4. The typeset is classic but not stuffy and I think that it'll look just as good in 10-20 years (or whenever the next logo redesign is). Now we just need to find a graphic to match.

By the way, afer looking at #5, does anybody else get an odd craving for a Bud Light??

Consider that you might have to print the logo in a single color or black and white at some point. Only #7 really works in black and white. However, I agree with denise that the silhouette looks awkward. A more stylized figure like the AVP one would be more appealing. I would also drop the "Promoting" tagline and use the yankee.org URL instead.

I also agree with denise that there are a lot of talented people in Yankee and I think they could have come up with some more contemporary looking logos. Most of these look really dated.

#5 is my favorite... easy to read from a distance and eye catching. Many of the rest suffer from text that can't be read from 10' away (or I'm just getting old.

Unknown said...

I like #5 the best but would change the ball colors like others have said. I also like #1.

At first glance, I like #5, but I think it's really going to be hard to put on logowear. It would look great on a white shirt, but as soon as you put it on, say Navy, you're going to lose it. The subtle color differences in the background are too subtle to be seen from a distance and are therefore lost.

Thinking about how things would look on different color backgrounds, I think you've got the best shot with #6. On a light shirt, leave it as is. On a dark shirt, change the blue to white and it still stands out. Oh, and lose the tag line.

#5 - This is the only one that "pops" on my high resolution monitor. Half of the other ones are unreadable on my monitor. The heavy block print on 5 makes it readable from far away. The thin letters on the other logos make the writing hard to see.

Think about how the logo is going to look at 15 feet away on a shirt or even far away if you print up banners for events. Especially if you co-sponser events you don't want to have the least readable logo.

First choice #1, second choice #6. Not crazy about the wording "promoting...." - maybe simplify with "New England Volleyball"?

QRon said...

#5 - it is the one that grabbed my attention right away. I agree with previous posters that the ball colors should be changed to red, white & blue.

#5 Struck me overall - easy to read(not sure I understand the little jag in the Y - it looks like a mistake)Seems like most agree with dropping the tagline or replacing with the website. Some of the others I find difficult to read for many of the font reasons given already. Someone else suggested that these should be reviewed for different applications - I would think that that would be a must. I could see possible problems for each of these depending on their use.

5, 4, and 6, in that order.
