Rick Pierce Awards - 2008
been active in Yankee for over 15 years. During this time, she has
contributed countless hours organizing, running, and mentoring various
levels of a particular womens club team. She has worked diligently over
the years to become an extremely solid and valuable team player, and her
positive attitude, good humor, and mental toughness make her a particularly
supportive teammate.
In addition to supporting her own teammates, she is always kind,
accommodating, and encouraging to opponents in her acknowledgment of good
volleys and positive attitudes on the other side of the net. She is
gracious in victory as well as in defeat, although her competitive nature
does shine through when she gives you the congratulatory hug for your win,
but promises, "Until next time..."
It is though diligent efforts and attitudes similar to hers that keeps the
Yankee family growing at all levels.
We are very proud to present Darcy Duke as the 2008 female recipient of the
Rick Pierce Sportsmanship Award.
This years male Rick Pierce recipient has played many roles over the years
in promoting volleyball and Yankee throughout New England. As a player, he
is a noble competitor, as well as great fun to play with or against. He has
his own special brand of humor that helps to ease the most intense of
moments.
He is probably known just as well for his work off the court. For the last
several years, he has been tireless in his efforts at photographing various
teams and players at Nationals, creating training videos for refereeing and
generally making himself useful to Yankee and the volleyball community on a
whole. Most importantly, he was the brain-child behind the creation of
something that I know hundreds of us feel we could not live without -- the
Boston Area Volleyball Players Listserve fondly know as the BAVP.
For all this and more, we are very proud to present Joshua Wachs the 2008
male recipient of the Rick Pierce Sportsmanship Award.

on the site under the loyality program. We just returned from our
very successful two sold out fall trips in October in Cancun and
November in the Turks and Caicos islands. The Turks and Caicos trip
featured Gold Medalists Kerri Walsh and Phil Dalhausser where the
Olympians were gracious enough to let everyone wear their Gold medals
while taking pictures with them.
Have you ever wanted to be coached by the best players in the
world while vacationing on a beautiful tropical island? Ever
try to hit a ball around the best blockers in the world Phil
Dalhausser and Kerri Walsh then have dinner with them and ask
them about their Gold Medals? How about having a beer with
Casey Jennings and Nick Lucena and ask them about their defensive
techniques and how they dig everything. Ask Angela Lewis how fun it is
to play on the women's tour and how she trains to get top 5 finishes?
Hit nectar sets from AL-B Hannemann and Canyon Ceman while Paige Davis
is helping you correct your hitting approach. Video Jason Ring, Anthony
Medel and Matt Olson while they pound balls into the sand then ask them
how to improve your vertical jump. These are the opportunities you will
have to improve your game while joining these pros on the upcoming
volleyball vacations trips.
We have 1 pro coach for every 5 volleyball vacationers. It is a
ratio that we are very proud of. Come and see what all the hype
is about before both trips sell out. The personalized coaching
you will receive from these friendly pros does not happen
anywhere else on earth. Surround yourself with like minded people
from all over the world and meet great friends and create memories that
will last a lifetime. Play volleyball all day or party with new friends
all night. The choice is up to you at volleyball vacations!
McCutcheon Accepts U.S. Women's National Team Head Coach Position
leading the U.S. Men's Olympic Volleyball Team to a gold medal at the 2008
Olympic Games in Beijing, Hugh McCutcheon (Christchurch, New Zealand) has
accepted the head coach position of the U.S. Women's National Team for the
2009-2012 Olympic quadrennial, according to USA Volleyball Chief Executive
Officer Doug Beal.
"This is a great opportunity for me to further develop professionally. I'm
excited by the challenges this change presents, and I'm optimistic that some
of the knowledge we've acquired with the men's program can translate to the
women," McCutcheon said in regards to changing roles to the U.S. Women's
National Team. "There will be differences in systems and aspects of
developing team culture but, at the end of the day, the fundamental
principles of volleyball are not gender-specific.
"Hugh proved throughout the past quadrennial his abilities as a great coach,
motivator and program manager," Beal said. "The direction he provided
allowed our men to steadily climb into position to be champions. Rarely has
a team been so good so often under such intense pressure as they were in
Beijing. I look forward to him bringing his talents, abilities, personality
and philosophy to our women's program! USA Volleyball is indeed fortunate
and pleased to be able to retain Hugh within our national team structure."
Beal notes this is not an uncommon situation in international or
professional volleyball. There are many examples of coaches moving from one
gender to the other, most notably Jose Roberto Guimaraes (Ze Roberto), who
led the Brazilian men's team to the gold medal at the 1992 Olympic Games,
and matched that success by leading the Brazilian women to the gold medal in
Beijing.
"Successful coaches are successful coaches," Beal said. "I have every
confidence that Hugh can learn the differences that surely exist between
genders and apply his philosophy to our women's team in a positive way."
Lindsey Berg (Honolulu), a two-time Olympian with the U.S. Women's National
Team and silver medalist at the 2008 Olympic Games, described McCutcheon as
a great fit for the program.
"Personally, I am absolutely thrilled Hugh has accepted the position to lead
our team," Berg said. "He will be able to help us take a huge step forward
in making change within our program in a very positive way. This will be a
great opportunity for our team to work under a different set of
philosophies. Hugh will be able to bring in fresh and new ideas for us to
build upon by bringing in aspects from the men's game, including how we
train and compete on the court. Overall, this is a great coaching move and
change for our program, and it is going to be exciting."
As the head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team at the 2008 Olympic Games,
McCutcheon, 39, and Team USA went undefeated in Beijing to claim its third
Olympic Games gold medal and its first podium finish since 1992. He leaves
the U.S. Men's National Team program with a 107-33 overall record in four
years and Team USA ranked second in the current FIVB World Ranking, its
highest ranking ever.
The U.S. enjoyed one of its best seasons ever in 2008 under McCutcheon's
guidance as the team won all three of its major tournaments of the year.
Team USA secured its first-ever FIVB World League championship in July 2008
after a bronze medal finish in the same event in 2007, the first time the
Americans earned back-to-back medals in the annual event. The U.S. started
the 2008 campaign in dominating fashion by sweeping all five matches at the
NORCECA Men's Continental Olympic Qualifier to earn its berth in the 2008
Olympics.
"(Hugh) meant everything to our team," U.S. Men's National Team libero Rich
Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.) said. "He was the mastermind of what we were
trying to do. He was the one who clearly focused our goal and got it written
down and set out a plan for how to get us there. In 2005, when we started
the quad, the idea that we would be gold medalists was pretty comical. It
seemed so far away. It's a huge credit to him that he kept us on that track
and had in mind a way to actually accomplish that."
McCutcheon, hired as an assistant coach for the U.S. Men's National Team in
April 2003, assisted the Americans to a fourth-place finish at the 2004
Olympic Games in Athens after the squad failed to win a single match at the
2000 Olympic Games. He was elevated to head coach of the U.S. Men's National
Team in February 2005 after Beal moved from his coaching role into the
position of CEO.
The U.S. Women's National Team also enjoyed remarkable success at the 2008
Olympic Games under head coach "Jenny" Lang Ping, who elected not to seek a
contract renewal for the upcoming quadrennial. Using a roster of eight
Olympic Games veterans, Team USA earned its first medal since the 1992
Olympic Games and finished with the silver medal falling to top-ranked
Brazil in the championship match. The U.S. finished second in its group
including a victory over host China, then went on to defeat second-ranked
Italy in the quarterfinals and third-ranked Cuba in the semifinals. The
Americans were the only team to take a set away from Brazil throughout the
Olympics.
"Jenny proved once again why she ranks among the very top of the elite
international coaches by leading the U.S. Women to the Olympic Games silver
medal in her home country under very difficult conditions," Beal said. "She
deserves a huge amount of credit for the team's medal performance.
Beal indicated that now is the time to build the sport across a broad range
of platforms based on the achievements earned during the 2008 Olympics.
"The objective for all USA Volleyball programs is to maintain the remarkable
success from Beijing, while at the same time, working to grow the profile of
our sport as significantly and widely as possible," Beal said. "This will be
very challenging as both the U.S. and the world head into a period of
uncertain economic times. Hugh is very aware of our goals as an
organization, and I am confident that in his new role, he will be in a
position to contribute to them significantly.
McCutcheon was not a stranger to USA Volleyball prior to landing his first
job with the U.S. Men's National Team. He served as a volunteer assistant
coach for the men's national team helping out during the 2001 FIVB World
League, the 2002 FIVB World Championship and five international tours. He
has also served as the head coach of the U.S. Boys' Youth National Team in
2000 and 2001.
According to Beal, USA Volleyball does not have a set timetable to fill the
now-vacated U.S. Men's National Team head coach position other than taking
the necessary time to find the most qualified person.

Club Getaway w/ ALB - Volleyball Vacations.com
Club Getaway <http://www.clubgeta
Vacation <http://www.Volleyba
pickup play and general partying.
Club Getaway is a "summer camp for adults" in Kent, CT which is
about two hours from Rockland. I've been going there for 7 years - even met
my wife there. I went almost every weekend and eventually joined the staff
there.
I've been helping Albert for years with these events because I admire the
dedication he has to making sure everyone has a good time and gets some good
personal instruction with their game. Al has played (and won) at the
highest levels of Pro Beach volleyball and Collegiate Division I (with UCLA
and Hawaii). I've known the guy for 11 years and I'm still amazed at the
depth at which he and other pros understand the game. You can learn more
from 5 minutes of instruction with this guy than you'll probably learn in 5
years playing on your own. Al also is one of the very best hand-setters
on the tour and he's helped a lot of people who thought they could never
handset into setters.
You'll also get a chance to play with/against Al. (Al's game is so good
that he can make ANYONE he plays with look like a star hitting those utterly
delicious handsets of his!)
Here's the rub: The weekend is like $439 and with the absurdly large CT
state "room tax" it comes to about $480. Club Getaway sells out almost
every weekend (it's that popular) and thus just isn't very prone to
discounting but.
While it isn't much... I can get anyone who's never been there before a $25
discount. Plus, people who sign up for the volleyball event will get a
FREE book of bar tickets to buy drinks (a $20 value) and a gift bag full of
AVP gear and signed surprises.

Coed Volleyball Tournament in Canada
Enter as a girl-guy team.
You want to know the level of play? It is varied and open to all levels. Top teams can battle for the cash while all teams just compete to see how far up the ladder they can advance.
The format of the tournament is called the LADDER FORMAT. That means there is no round-robin or playoffs. Each team gets to play 12 single games.
Unlike most tournaments, there is no sitting at all. Each team plays every game, all day.
Prizes? The first 4 rounds are for seeding, after that .... prizes are awarded PER GAME.
That's right! Teams on the top courts get cash prizes after every game won.
The tournament is Saturday, July 26th, 2008.
The location is Brampton, Ontario, Canada. The city of Brampton is a 2 hour drive northwest of Buffalo.
The cost is $50/team.

New Mikasa Indoor Volleyball - Beijing 2008
The volleyball of the future and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. With advanced aerodynamic engineering, the new MIKASA MVA200 offers better stability and ball control than any other indoor ball. This volleyball brings a brand new look and feel to the game and will see action for the first time as the world’s best indoor volleyball athletes compete for the Gold this summer (2008). The world's best, just got better.
Tests conducted by Mikasa Corporation in close cooperation with leading Volleyball National Teams throughout the world, resulted in the following key features of the new MVA balls:
- Balls fly more stable due dimple surface and reduced panels
- Increased grip due to new dimple technology cover material
- Increased visibility of the ball due to new panel-shape/design
- Reduced rebound of the new ball = increased controllability
- Reduced impact-power = increased softness of the new ball

Pottstown RumbleVolleyball Results
Men's pro action saw 67 teams, making it the deepest and toughest field yet with multiple AVP teams. One AVP team came out the winner as Adam Roberts (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina) & Eyal Zimet (Israel) defeated Mike Salek (Brooklyn, New York) and Seidu Anajenko (Accra, Ghana). Between Zimet's timely big blocks and Salek and Anajenko's costly miscues on jump serves, Roberts and Zimet prevailed 15-12.
6 time champions Beetle Baily and Jason Robertson bowed out in the quarterfinals, losing to the 3rd/4th place finishers Nate Ocasio and Dave Fisher.
Thanks to all players and spectators for making this year's Rumble, another great one! Mark your calendar for next year's Rumble - June 27 & 28, 2009. See you there!!!
